You can test it by walking up the car and seeing if the keyless entry unlocks the door - It shouldn't. It has to close! 2) Disable the key radio when not in use - On most Toyota smart keys, you do this by holding down LOCK and pressing UNLOCK twice They key's LED should flash 4 times to show it's disabled. Two things you can do yourself - 1) Get a Faraday pouch (Or a metal tin) and store the key in that. ![]() There are mitigations A lot of keys go to sleep when they are not moved for some time (I believe current Toyota smart keys do this), and fancier ones have signal time limits, so the challenge-response signal will take longer if it's from further away and the car will recognise this and ignore it. There is, but it means you have to practically press the Start button with the key to start the car, as disabling the keyless entry also disables the keyless startĪ well equipped thief can pick up the key signal from much further away than it would normally Many years ago I remember them demonstrating picking up a signal from (IIRC) 50m away with a Yagi-style antenna at defcon.
