I use it to train first time shooters and especially women (who usually then ask me to buy it - why I have had so many non-USGI guns - they are are my teach and sell guns). It's incredibly light and easy to shoot with minimal recoil. Practicality? It's a fantastic weapon as far as ease of operation, manual of arms, service and reliability with a small amount of care. Inland's tend to be the cheapest and I got mine from another M1 fan locally for $700 - they are on our board between $700-$800 a few times a year. Price? I'd say don't go over $1000 on an Underwood. My Plainfields and Iver Johnsons get workouts and I've also had Universals (which are fine depending on how much you shoot, there just aren't many non USGI Universal parts if one of those breaks). My Inland gets shot once or twice a year. I've had a number M1 carbines and there is noting like a WWII rifle for the feel of authenticity.
